Forget the Former Things

Isaiah 43:18-19

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

When God calls you to do something, generally, it is too big for us…currently. We cannot do it now— especially in our own strength.

But if God is calling you to it, he will develop you into being able to do what he has called you to do—in his power and strength. Like it says in Romans 4:17b: “…the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.” God made us for a purpose. So even if you are not developed enough to carry out his purpose…yet…you will be with his help.

I love the example for Gideon. He was hiding out because of the Midianites. The angel of the Lord appears to him and says: “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” Gideon, at that time, was no warrior! He was living in fear. He definitely did not see himself as a mighty warrior.

But, God did. God was seeing Gideon the way he made him and for his purpose. So when he says: “Go in the strength you have…,” he was meaning go in the strength that God had already provided for him. In other words, go and live out the purpose for which God created him. Grow, learn, develop, etc., the skills, talents, and aptitudes that he would eventually develop through use would help him to become the person that God created him to be.

God was giving him permission to “act as if” he was already that person. In other words, he could be creative and act like that person would be. Yes, there were specific things God wanted him to do. But Gideon was free to “fan into flame the gift of God.”

Why? Because God was with him. He was not really going in Gideon's own strength. But he was going in the strength God gave him because God was with him and strengthening him to become who God created him to be.

So, think about yourself. Is there something that God is calling you to do? To be? Does it seem too big for you? Too overwhelming? Take heart! If God is calling you to do or be, HE WILL provide for you to do it or become it. Ask God to help you—to lead and guide you. Go and ”act as if” you are already doing it or becoming it. Rest assured, God will help you—EQUIP YOU--to carry out what he has for you to do or become.
